Abstract

The main objective was to determine whether the fishing maneuver to capture small pelagic fishes releases compounds such as oils and fats, in quantities enough to cause damage to the associated seabirds. Two water samples were taken from each trip, one at the beginning of the haul (without catch) and the other during the haul (with catch). The concentration of oils and fats in the water was determined using Soxhlet method. Wilcoxon signed-rank test and Spearman correlation test were conducted. Mean oil and fat values were low (0.0 – 47.2 g/ml); the statistical analysis results indicated that there were no significant differences in most before and after maneuver concentrations. The results found suggest that it is highly unlikely that fatty compounds measured during the maneuver could represent a risk to seabirds in this fishery.
