Abstract

Anaphoric relations are fundamental for reading comprehension, since they give coherence to texts. This article presents the main findings reported in the specialized literature, specifically in psycholinguistics. In the last four decades, the aspects that influence the processing and understanding of anaphors in both adults and children have been investigated. It has been found that there are several factors involved in this process such as grammatical elements and knowledge in general. Hence the importance of developing skills that help facilitate the understanding of anaphors, mainly in the child population. More research is required that includes measuring the brain response to provide more detailed information about how these structures are processed during reading.
