Abstract

The growing demand for water from the free aquifer for supplemental irrigation in the rural area of Coronel Moldes has increased the need to know its suitability for such use. According to the Riverside classification (US Salinity Laboratory) the aquifer water was found to be mostly "unsuitable" due to high Sodium Adsorption Ratio (SAR) and salinity values. According to the FAO classification, the aquifer water was "unrestricted" to "slightly to moderately restricted", even in cases with SAR > 20 and high salinities. The introduction of sodium and other cations into the soil solution can impose stress on crops, affect soil structure, permeability and groundwater chemistry. It is essential to consider integrated soil-climate studies that, together with the quality of irrigation water, allow the definition of sustainable management practices.
