Abstract

The paper describes the importance of Panagrellus redivivus nematodeas initial food for fish larvae and crustaceans. It explains why to use this microworm as living food in aquaculture, stressing its high nutritional value, which does not differ significantly from other live foods used widely in aquaculture; such as Artemia and rotifers. The reasons why the effect of living food is better, as first feeding larvae, than commercial foos, is cleraly manifested in the growth rate and survival of larvae nourished with P. redivivus. The main reasons for the use of culture means are mentioned for the production of this nematode, characterized of P. redivivus on growth and survival of different fish and crustaceans species are discussed, obtaining satisfactory results. Finally, the microworms are an alternative with a high potential as living food, mainly during the first feeding fish larvae and crustaceans.
