Abstract

Nolinaceae family includes over 50 species adapted to arid and semiarid regions of Mexico. Natural populations have declined alarmingly due to overexploitation and habitat destruction, so the development of fast and efficient systems for mass propagation of these species is an important tool for its conservation and rational exploitation. In this study, protocols are reported for in vitro mass propagation of the species Beaucarnea goldmanii, B. gracilis, B. recurvata, Dasylirion leiophyllum, D. longissimum, D. lucidum,
D. serratifolium, Nolina durangensis, N. longifolia and N. parviflora. This is done by axillary sprouting in basal explants cultured in media supplemented with various cytokinins. The observed efficiency was 3.9 to 10.3 new shoots per explant, depending on the species. Shoots were rooted in basal media with or without activated charcoal.
