Abstract

The wood of Prosopis laevigata (Willd.) M.C. Johnst is used in several industries in Mexico. When furniture is jointed with nails or screws, cracks may appear that reduce the aesthetical and mechanical strength values. The shear strength (MPa) and fiber tear (%)
were determined in wood joined with melamine formaldehyde (MF) and polyvinyl acetate (PVAc). The glued samples were submitted to environment weakening under a normalized atmosphere (A1), wet (A2) and dry (A3) atmosphere according to UNEEN 301. The results of shear strength showed highly significant differences (p<0.0001) between adhesive and weakening conditions, with the exception of glued samples with PVAc and tested at A2 condition. The fibers tear ranged from 0% to 66%.
