Abstract

Introduction: Nodular glomerulosclerosis has traditionally been recognized as a pathognomonic lesion of diabetic nephropathy. However, it has become evident that this condition can occur in the absence of diabetes, albeit less frequently. Objective: This case report presents a patient who developed nodular glomerulosclerosis without the presence of classical risk factors such as diabetes mellitus, hypertension, or smoking. Methods: A retrospective case study of a patient who required hemodialysis due to acute kidney injury is presented. A comprehensive review of the medical history, including family history, lifestyle, and laboratory results, was conducted. A renal biopsy was performed to confirm the histopathological diagnosis. Results: The patient, without a history of relevant chronic diseases, presented with proteinuria and hematuria. Histopathological findings from the renal biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of idiopathic nodular glomerulosclerosis. The initiation of hemodialysis led to a significant improvement in the patient’s clinical condition. Conclusion: Idiopathic nodular glomerulosclerosis represents a complex clinical entity with an as yet incompletely elucidated pathophysiology. Further research is required to understand the underlying molecular mechanisms and develop more specific therapeutic strategies for this patient population.
