The educational difficulties experienced in Mexico are compounded by those related to COVID-19. Upper Secondary Education (USE) was no exception to suffer and accentuate the ravages of major educational problems. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to analyze some of the challenges faced by high school students in the country, especially those in conditions of contextual disadvantage. Some statistical data on USE corresponding to educational quality indicators, are shared to identify the current state of this type of education. The article describes how the problems of USE students have worsened due to inequality and their life situations. It also presents the challenges involved in meeting the educational needs inherent to their conditions and proposes aspects that should be considered for their return to the classroom.
