Memory is a cognitive tool essential to the musician since it allows them to make sense of what they play and listen. For this reason, it is a central ability in music education. In solfege classes, traditionally, dictation has been the way of working. This article presents an analysis of some influential factors on memorization of tonal melodic dictation aiming to substantiate teaching and learning strategies for this subject. After the analysis of an important part of the state of knowledge and some brief recommendations, it is concluded that, since it is a multifactorial phenomenon, the line of research on the development of memory in dictation requires further research to be certain about its application to learning. Nonetheless, this work is presented as a baseline in order for teachers and tutors experiment systematically in the design and evaluation of their strategies, relying on the scientific knowledge achieved.
