Abstract

The current boom of the competency-based methodology in the field of education is due in part to the changes that have taken place in society, which has led to modifications within educational institutions. According to the above, the following aspects are observed in universities: 1) students are autonomous in acquiring knowledge, utilizing various digital tools; 2) employability, as a university degree is no longer sufficient to secure a job relatively quickly after graduation; 3) standards in the quality of university education; 4) knowledge, which should contribute to the formation of professionals who perform in diverse work settings; 5) the teacher must now focus their teaching activities on student learning rather than teaching. As summarized by Zabalza (2006), changes occur on three levels: the institutional environment, the structure of knowledge, and the role to be played by the teacher.
