This article analyzes some latent tensions between the traditional "grammar-translation" language teaching approach and the "communicative competence" approach in additional to English language courses (Italian, German, or French) offered in the Bachelor's Degree in Foreign Languages (DFL) program at the Universidad Autónoma de Zacatecas (UAZ). With the purpose of exploring opportunities for creativity in teaching through didactic proposals that include literature and translation as complementary activities to the use of standardized teaching manuals, which do not always meet the educational needs of the mentioned teaching and learning context.
