In 1987, as part of the international framework and the global environmental crisis, the World Commission on Environment and Development created a document called Our Common Future (Brundtland Report), which states that development and environment cannot be separated and poses the challenge of achieving economic, ecological and social sustainability at the same time. This report defines sustainable development as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” (Universidad para la Paz et al., 2002: 32).
