ABSTRACT
Introduction: Visual acuity requires testing in the everyday clinical setting for visual impairments. Objective: To provide the most up-to-date bases and foundations for the measurement of visual acuity. Materials and Methods: A comprehensive literature search of reference books and recent articules in PubMed and Cochrane online databases was carried out. Results: Vision is one of the most important senses for the human being; therefore it must be periodically reviewed throughout the patient in various consultations from medical, stomatological, nutritional to optometric or ophthalmological. In an everyday traditional clinical scenario, only one of the visual functions is measured: high contrast central resolution (visual acuity). The fact that this simple test represents excellent results for screening visual deficiencies, is an amazing advantage. Therefore, this test is an acceptable screening method in everyday clinical practice and we must know its fundament and updates.
