Introduction: Knowing and having sufficient information on contraceptive methods (CM) is essential in university students, who should be more informed about reproductive health compared to the rest of the population. According to the National Survey of Demographic Dynamics 2018, in Mexico, the percentage of users of some CM was 53.4%. Objective: To identify the level of knowledge about contraception methods and their use in university students. Methods: This is a quantitative, descriptive, and cross-sectional study with multi-stage probability sampling in a population of 2,004 students of a Mexican public university. The sample of 348 students was calculated through the formula for finite population. The semi-structured questionnaire “Knowledge about contraception methods and their use in undergraduate students” was applied. Data analysis was performed using the SPSS 23.0 program, applying descriptive statistics. Results: The average age was 20.4 ± 1.77 years, from 18 to 28 years, with a predominance of the female sex (57.8%). Only 14.4% have attended family planning services; 67.8% have started sex life, of which 94.9% reported having used some CM; the condom 89.4% was the most used method; 88.5% had knowledge. Conclusions: Mexico applies a comprehensive sex education model; however, this has not been sufficient to ensure adequate knowledge and use of CM. It is suggested to create policies to improve the knowledge and the use of CM. LUXMÉDICA AÑO 15, NÚMERO 44, MAYO-AGOSTO 2020.
