Abstract

We present a review of fat embolism. It is defined as the presence of fat particles inside a blood vessel that causes obstruction of its flow; on the other hand, fat embolism syndrome is the set of signs and symptoms caused by obstruction. The clinical findings include mainly respiratory, renal, neurological and vascular alterations with skin manifestations. It is essential to know its pathophysiology, which currently is not fully understood, however, different theories have been documented, which are simplified in mechanical and biochemical theory, which support and explain the etiology and manifestations of the fat embolism syndrome. Although old, Gurd's criteria continue to be the most accepted criteria to diagnose fat embolism syndrome and once estabilished treatment should be started, giving priority to respiratory support. Prognosis is generally good. LUXMÉDICA, AÑO 13, NÚMERO 39, SEPT-DIC 2018, PP 29-37.
