Biopsia de músculo esquelético: una herramienta importante para la investigación de la fisiología del ejercicio

A partir de los 60s, las biopsias de músculo, junto con estudios bioquímicos han mejorado la comprensión de la fisiología del ejercicio. El avance en la técnica de las biopsias y el desarrollo de la biología molecular han permitido mayor entendimiento sobre la regulación molecular del metabolismo en las fibras musculares y su adaptación al ejercicio. Sin embargo, su utilidad ha sido cuestionada argumentando que el riesgo del procedimiento podría ser mayor al beneficio obtenido. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue realizar una revisión de la literatura sobre la seguridad y la eficacia de la biopsia en músculo esquelético para el estudio del ejercicio. Dicha revisión evidencia que, realizada correctamente y por un experto, la biopsia de músculo esquelético es un procedimiento seguro, de bajo riesgo y es una herramienta efectiva para la investigación de la fisiología del ejercicio.
