Abstract

In order to evaluate the welfare principles (feeding, facilities, health and behavior) in sheep of small productive units (SPU), the modified Animal Welfare Indicators (AWIN) protocol was applied in SPU conditions of the northwest of the State of Mexico. Ten sheep farms with 217 sheeps were evaluated. The results show an animal welfare index qualified as good (2.34) for the SPU´s evaluated. The animal welfare indicators that showed the greatest influence on the score were body condition, mortality, wool dirt, tail mutilation, anemia produced by internal parasites evaluated by FAMACHA method (François Malan Chart’s) and leakage. To validate and generalize the tool generated in this study, future works should expand the sample of SPU and sheeps.
