Abstract

What traditionally has been considered as the first Mexican historie novel Jicotencal (1826), was published in the United States and was written by a Cuban. Actually, the Yucatecan Justo Sierra O'Reilly ( 1814-1861) should be considered the first Mexican who wrote a historie novel (1841). And not just that: The first two newspaper serial novels published in our country are: Un año en el Hospital de San Lázaro, also from Sierra O'Reilly, and El fistol del Diablo (1845-18469 from Manuel
Payno (181O-1894).
