Abstract

The relationship between language and culture is explored in this article, beginning with what has traditionally been called "the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis", originally proposed as a postulate. Over the years the postulate has been transformed into a hypothesis, which has been tested in different ways. Recent contributions to the cognitive sciences allow us to transcend Whorf's ideas, with the achievement of a more precise understanding of the role of language in individual and cultural cognitive processes.
