Depression is a common condition with repercussions on the quality of life. Cognitive-behavioral therapy postulates that this disorder is associated with irrational beliefs. The objective of this study was to review the association between irrational beliefs and depression based on a systematic review. Twenty-six articles that met the inclusion criteria were analyzed. All the investigations reported significant positive associations between irrational beliefs and the disorder; 27% mentioned that irrational beliefs are correlated with depression, 73% specified which beliefs were correlated with said condition. 37% agree that low tolerance for frustration helps predict symptoms of depression, 32% mention beliefs of catastrophism and self-loathing, and 21% belief in overexertion. It is concluded that there is evidence that the greater the presence of irrational beliefs, the greater the frequency and severity of depressive symptoms.
