About the Journal
Focus and scope
Objective and information
The aim of this editorial space is to disseminate historical thought and practice to the university student community, as well as to provide an academic forum for dialogue.
In this way, Horizonte Histórico becomes a space where students from various higher education institutions can publish their academic work, provided that the subject matter is related to history.
Horizonte Histórico is not affiliated with any specific branch of historical work, provided that the texts comply with a serious methodology in line with our editorial guidelines.
Audience
Horizonte Histórico is aimed directly at both specialists and non-specialists in the study of history, as its content includes both academic texts and historical dissemination. It aims to reach undergraduate and graduate students and researchers in any discipline who find in any of the published works a source of reference or reading of interest for their own research, as well as readers who have an interest in history.
Theme
The central discipline of this journal is History, linking the professional and scientific study of this discipline in an interdisciplinary manner with other related fields of knowledge, especially those related to the Social Sciences and Humanities, but without excluding others. In general, any text whose central theme of study is the historical processes of the past linked to any scientific area is subject to publication in Horizonte Histórico.
In terms of historical topics, the accepted works have focused on the topics set by number, so that articles on different types of history can be found: social, gender, women's, everyday life, political, military, emotions, etc. There are also texts on the philosophy of history and historiography.
Ethical Commitment
The journal Horizonte Histórico follows the guidelines of the Code of Conduct and Best Practice Guidelines for Journal Editors (COPE). We are committed to maintaining high ethical standards in all aspects of our editorial process, ensuring transparency, research integrity, and respect for academic freedom. This commitment seeks to ensure quality and ethical rigor in every publication we share with our academic community.
Submission of papers
Entries should be sent as attachments to the email address horizontehistorico@hotmail.com.
If you have any questions, send a message to the journal's email address and review the section on submissions, which outlines the guidelines for authors.
Preparation of bibliographic references
Horizonte Histórico uses the Chicago 17th edition citation system, so we ask that all submissions comply with these requirements. Below are examples of how to cite.
Libros
Last name, Full name. Title: Subtitle [in italics]. City: Publisher, year of publication. URL or DOI [if either is available].
Book chapters
First name Last name, “Essay or chapter title,” in Full title, edited by First name and Last name (City of publication: Publisher, year), page or pages consulted, URL or DOI [if either is available].
Magazine articles
First name Last name, “Article title: Subtitle,” Journal title volume* , no. xx (year): page or pages consulted, URL or DOI [if either is available].
- The word "volume" and the abbreviation "vol." are not used; instead, the corresponding Arabic numeral is used (when applicable). However, the issue number of the journal is indicated with the abbreviation "no."
Multimedia
For internet citations, the site must be specialized in the subject and supported by an institution dedicated to the professional dissemination or research of the subject. The citation will be made as follows: Author's name, title of the text, website, and date of consultation; or, as required by the Chicago 17th edition system.
Files
Chicago does not have a standard model for citing files. However, it is recommended to follow the examples below:
- Railway Historical Archive. Madrid Railway Museum. MZA documentary series. Commercial Service, boxes 345-387.
- National Historical Archive. Ministry of Justice, Property Registry 398, file 620. Reference number 16,533, file 0031. Ministry of Justice, Magistrates and Judges, 4986, file 18825. Ministry of Finance, 5386-2, file 26.
The important thing here is to start from the general and move to the specific (beginning with the Archive and ending with the file or box number), trying to provide enough information for readers to consult them correctly if they so wish.
Footnotes
In addition to bibliographic references, the History requires the mandatory use of footnotes and citations ordered with Arabic numerals in consecutive order. Furthermore, the first time a work (whether a book, chapter, journal, etc.) is cited, the full name must be added. Subsequent citations of the same work should be abbreviated. Below is an example of a book citation:
- Note at the bottom
- Pedro Barceló, A Brief History of Greece and Rome, 2nd ed. (Madrid: Alianza, 2001).
- Abbreviated note
- Barceló, Breve historia..., 58-60.
- The ellipsis (...) is necessary because it indicates that the title of the work is abbreviated.
- Barceló, Breve historia..., 58-60.
- Bibliographic reference
- Barceló, Pedro. A Brief History of Greece and Rome. 2nd ed. Madrid: Alianza, 2001.
NOTE: Since Chicago no longer allows the use of Ibid., and Ibidem.,& nbsp;, the journal Horizonte Histórico does not either. If the author is accustomed to using it, we request that it be modified. The same applies to Op. Cit. .
Some considerations for oral citations and images
- Oral citations are the responsibility of the author.
- Articles may include images, but they must be properly referenced without violating any rights of the author(s) of these images: the name of the work, the author, and the year of creation; or, failing that, the name of the file, collection, etc.; or, the above information together with a description of the image, the link where it was obtained, and the date of consultation.
Original articles
In order to accept and publish any submission, it is mandatory that it has not been previously published or submitted for consideration by any other journal (or that an explanation has been provided in the Comments to the editor). In other words, Horizonte Histórico will consider unpublished and original works.
Frequency of publication
Horizonte Histórico is a biannual magazine published twice a year (January-June and July-December). It was launched in 2009.
Open access policy
This journal provides immediate open access to its content, based on the principle that offering the public free access to research helps to promote a greater global exchange of knowledge.
Horizonte Histórico does not and will not charge its readers any subscription fees, nor will it charge authors for submitting, processing, or publishing their articles.
Copyright policy
The copyright of any article in Horizonte Histórico belongs to the author(s). As a condition of publication, authors agree to release their copyright under a shared license, specifically the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International License.
Plagiarism detection
Plagiarism in all its forms constitutes unethical publishing behavior and is unacceptable. Consequently, any manuscript that has a similarity of 20% or more with other published texts will be rejected and not considered for publication. The software iThenticate will be used to check for originality.
Interoperability protocols
This digital journal, hosted and published by Open Journal System (OJS), implements the OAI-PMH (Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting) protocol, a harvesting protocol for metadata exchange based on the Dublin Core schema.
This can be verified using the OAI-MPH Validator (https://validator.oaipmh.com/), using the following URL:

Digital preservation policies and archiving systems
Actions at the institutional level:
The content hosted on the Open Journal System (OJS) platform of the journal Horizonte Histórico is digitally preserved on the designated server, in accordance with the processes established by the Editorial Department of the General Directorate of Dissemination and Outreach and the Networks and Telecommunications Department of the General Directorate of Planning and Development of the Autonomous University of Aguascalientes (UAA). In general, this process consists of the following:
- Editorial Department, General Directorate for Dissemination and Outreach:
- Frequent maintenance of the site and technical administration of the institutional OJS.
- Version updates.
- Automatic backup every 12 hours, with the possibility of historical access to previous backups; involving:
- OJS configuration files.
- The database.
- Backup log.
- Automated monitoring of backups, tracking storage space.
- Networks and Telecommunications Department, General Directorate of Planning and Development:
- Monthly backup of OJS, with implications similar to the constant backups of the Editorial Department, involving:
- Backup log.
- Automated monitoring of backups, tracking storage space.
Complementary strategies:
Horizonte Histórico, being published in the Open Journal System (OJS) software of the Public Knowledge Project (PKP), supports its publications in the archiving systems with which the platform is compatible, such as:
- Controlled Lots of Copies Keep Stuff Safe (CLOCKSS): A system that guarantees the secure and permanent digital preservation of publications based on technology developed by Stanford University. It allows participating libraries to archive digital journals and their content by validating cache memories and restoring them in case of loss or corruption.
- Lots of Copies Keep Stuff Safe (LOCKSS): This is an open source tool created by Stanford University Library that makes it easier for libraries to preserve electronic journals by periodically collecting newly published content. The files are continuously verified with copies stored at other institutions, allowing any damaged or lost information to be restored. (See the Publishing Manifesto: https://revistas.uaa.mx/index.php/horizontehistorico/gateway/lockss).
- PKP Preservation Network (PKP PN): Enables publishers using OJS to ensure the digital preservation of their content. In the event that a journal ceases operations or is no longer available online, continuous access to its articles and issues is guaranteed in the long term. To this end, PKP PN uses LOCKSS technology, which offers a distributed and decentralized preservation model supported by multiple institutions.
Likewise, through the services of Crossref, Horizonte Histórico supports the metadata of its articles by assigning a Digital Object Identifier (DOI) to each one, which enables their persistent identification and facilitates their consultation.
Self-archiving is also encouraged for individuals who have contributed to any work published in previous issues, so that they can store their articles in personal repositories as an additional strategy for preserving information.
