Abstract

Antibiotics as feed additives in diets offered to growing-finishing cattle are being prohibited, therefore, the purpose of this research was to determine growth-performance parameters of young bulls by using a blend of essential oils plus vitamin D3 (EO+HyD) as feed additive. Therefore, a feeding trial was carried out with 1,620 young bulls which were fed the first 126 days of fattening with a diet supplemented with EO+HyD (120+0.12 mg/kg of diet, respectively) or with monensin sodium (MON, 25 mg/kg diet). The cattle that received EO+HyD showed greater (P<0.05) daily weight gain and gain efficiency (4.1%), improving dietary net energy by 3.2%. Morbidity was lower (2.72 vs 6.17%) for cattle supplemented with EO+HyD. It is concluded that EO+HyD is a promising alternative to replace monensin sodium in feed formulation in the initial stage for fattening cattle.
