Abstract

The special issue of Euphyía on Environmental and Animal Ethics reflects on the urgent need to revisit traditional ethical theories in light of the current environmental crisis. The editors emphasize how ethics has evolved from an anthropocentric focus to a more inclusive consideration that encompasses animals, ecosystems, and the inorganic environment. This shift responds to the negative impacts of industrialization and the irrational exploitation of nature.

The articles explore diverse critical perspectives. Among them, they examine the tensions between environmentalism and animal rights, historical anthropocentric practices concerning animals, and environmental ethics proposals grounded in responsibility towards future generations. They also address ethical and political challenges posed by climate change, such as climate displacement and the rights of affected communities.

The dossier advocates for an expanded ethics that recognizes the interconnectedness between humans and nature, challenging speciesist and anthropocentric paradigms. In doing so, it seeks to foster interdisciplinary reflection that inspires both philosophical thought and activism for a more sustainable and equitable planet for all its inhabitants.
