The philosophy of well-being has emerged as a rapidly growing field of interest in contemporary philosophy, as well as in various disciplines that engage with this concept, including psychology, economics, public policy, political science, and ecology. These studies are not merely conceptual, but have important normative implications that impact various aspects of our daily lives. However, in Latin America, philosophical reflection on well-being has been scarcely developed, which has limited the academic discussion in Spanish on the subject and, therefore, the analysis of the specific challenges we face in our region, as well as local contributions to the global debate.

This special issue aims to contribute to the development of this research line by fostering an interdisciplinary discussion on how to understand well-being and related concepts from philosophical, scientific, and applied perspectives in Latin America. Additionally, we seek to generate literature in Spanish that can serve as reference material for undergraduate students, in order to promote research that contributes to thinking about, as well as improving, well-being in our region.

We invite the academic community to submit articles that address issues related to well-being, from various philosophical and multidisciplinary perspectives. Some of the topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Reformulations, discussions, and critiques of classical well-being theories: Hedonism, Eudaimonism, Theories of Realized Desires, Objective List Theories, Perfectionist Theories (eastern and western), etc.
  • Reflections on the resonance constraint and its philosophical implications.
  • Types of entities to which well-being can be attributed (welfare subjects).
  • Philosophical proposals on distress, pain, grief, and their role in well-being.
  • Feminist and/or decolonial perspectives on well-being.
  • Conceptions of "buenos víveres” (good living) and their relationships with well-being in Latin America.
  • Philosophy of the science of well-being: epistemological, ontological, and methodological approaches.
  • Theoretical foundations and practical applications in welfare policies.
  • Theoretical, conceptual, and methodological problems for the measurement of well-being.
  • Well-being and social justice: equity, inequality, and access to dignified living conditions.
  • Environmental well-being: relationships between ecology, sustainability, and human well-being.
  • Philosophical discussions on the Latin American happiness paradox (low objective well-being and high subjective well-being).
  • The relationship between subjective well-being and objective well-being in the formulation of public policies.
  • Interactions between well-being and autonomy: philosophical dilemmas, as well as their application to bioethics and human rights.
  • Temporal dimensions of well-being: well-being throughout life and intergenerational well-being.

In case of doubts regarding the relevance of the topic to be developed, its suitability to the special issue, or its philosophical dimensions, authors are invited to contact the editors or submit their abstracts (max. 500 words) prior to April 14, 2025.  To contact the editors or submit your abstract, please address to: jorge.oseguera@uaem.mx and ana.melchor@cua.uam.mx
