This paper analyses the work of Ignacio Manuel Altamirano from its historical and cultural context. The study addresses the most representative themes of the author's work in order to establish a dialogue between them and the socio-political situation of the country. Firstly, the author refers to the importance of the nascent nationalism of the late nineteenth century, which gave way to a new way of making literature and exposing the situation of the most vulnerable groups. The writers of this period focused on the transformation of the country from literature, so the themes of their works began to focus on social issues.
