This work aims to document the importance of pre-Hispanic and colonial codices, serving as a source of reference for those who wish to know more about these works of the pre-Columbian civilizations. When the Spaniards arrived, they realized that the native peoples had a sophisticated way of recording their history through their canvases, called "amoxtli" in Nahuatl, as well as in Maya and Mixtec languages. The Nahuatlspeaking groups called these books "amoxtli", while the Spanish called them "codices" because of their resemblance to European illustrated manuscripts. Today, codices are classified according to their historiographical, cultural, ethnographic and thematic importance, as well as the material from which they are made and their origin.
