The aim of this article is to develop a historiographical discussion of the main arguments, approaches, and methodologies in force for the study of rural education in Mexico during the post-revolutionary period and educational federalization, 1920-1940. In this way, a great variety of proposals are identified, which can be classified into four groups: social, institutional, Church-State conflict and teacher federalization history. In addition, it is shown that a microhistorical approach is a way to revitalize these studies, which have been characterized, in recent years, by their treatment of local history from an empiricism addicted to the official document.
