Abstract

Man has been related to plants since time immemorial, which led him to classify them. The objective of this article is to show the significant content of the ritual use of sacred plants for entheogenic purposes in pre-Columbian civilizations. Four topics are discussed: the entheogenic purposes of some plants around the world; their use in pre-Columbian civilizations; the evidence of their use, since they are even mentioned in artistic manifestations; and the transmission of knowledge about these plants, which survives to the present day despite the efforts of the conquistadors to eliminate this practice.
