The immune system is a complex network of highly specialized structures and cells that form our defense system against external infectious threats offered by our environment and neoplastic threats that we could suffer in the internal environment. Through its two components, the innate and the adaptive, it responds in a general and fast way in the first and specific and long term in the other. Here we review the components of the normal immune system and its response mechanisms to specific aggressions and describe the changes that occur in it with the age.
