Abstract

This essay offers a comparative analysis of Rosa Luxemburg and Flora Tristan in order to examine the relationship between organization and spontaneity within the socialist tradition. From a theoretical and historical perspective, it argues that both thinkers, despite their distinct contexts, converge on a non-mechanistic understanding of working-class political action. Luxemburg, in her analysis of the mass strike, contends that organization does not precede action but rather emerges from it as a product of collective experience and the internal dynamics of class struggle. Spontaneity, far from representing disorder, is understood as a creative force capable of generating new forms of coordination and political consciousness.

In contrast, Flora Tristan operates in a pre-Marxist context marked by the absence of consolidated labor organizations. Her work anticipates in practice what Luxemburg later formulates theoretically. Through her itinerant activism, direct engagement with workers, and efforts to build networks of solidarity, Tristan demonstrates a form of organization that arises from lived experience rather than pre-existing institutional structures. The essay thus suggests that Tristan embodies an early, practical expression of Luxemburg’s principle that organization emerges from movement.

Ultimately, the paper proposes a dialectical interpretation of the relationship between spontaneity and organization. While organization is necessary to sustain and consolidate collective action, it must remain open to the transformative energy of the masses. This tension is essential for rethinking contemporary emancipatory processes and the forms of political organization they require.
