Abstract

Introduction: Alcohol consumption is common behavior among young people and is associated with various harmful consequences at the family, social, and personal levels. One of the most concerning outcomes is the increase in risky sexual behaviors, which may lead to unplanned pregnancies and a higher incidence of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Objective: To analyze the relationship between alcohol consumption and risky sexual behaviors among high school adolescents. Methodology: A correlational, cross-sectional, and prospective study was conducted. The sample consisted of 243 high school students from Encarnación de Díaz, Jalisco, Mexico. Data were collected using the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) and the Health and Sexual Habits Survey, which had Cronbach’s alpha coefficients of .86 and .90, respectively. Results: A moderate positive correlation was found between alcohol consumption and sexual risk behaviors (r = .401, p < .0001). Among participants, 78.6% were classified as having a medium risk for alcohol use, and 55.1% were identified as having a medium level of sexual risk behavior. Conclusion: Alcohol consumption among adolescents contributes to impulsive sexual decision-making, heightening the risk of engaging in unsafe sexual practices. Social pressure and alcohol-induced disinhibition reduce contraceptive use, highlighting the urgent need for comprehensive prevention strategies.
