Cognitive Impairment and the Presence of Depression in Institutionalized Older Adults in Private Nursing Homes in Aguascalientes

Introduction: The increase in life expectancy has led to a surge in the global population of older adults, bringing with it a higher incidence of conditions associated with aging. Among these, cognitive impairment and depression are particularly notable, as they often coexist and significantly diminish the quality of life in this group. Objective: To determine the relationship between cognitive impairment and the presence of depression in institutionalized older adults in private nursing homes in Aguascalientes. Methodology: A quantitative, correlational, cross-sectional, and prospective study. A total of 50 older adults of both sexes were included, selected by convenience from six private nursing homes. The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) and the Geriatric Depression Scale by Yesavage were used for data collection, both instruments with high reliability (Cronbach’s alpha of 0.89 and 0.80, respectively). The hypothesis was tested using the chi-square test. Results: The average age of participants was 76 years (ranging from 60 to 99), with 54% being women. 52% had been institutionalized for less than a year, and 68% had entered voluntarily. Surprisingly, 70% of the participants showed signs of depression, and 98% exhibited cognitive impairment. However, no statistically significant association was found between cognitive impairment and depression (p = 0.123). Conclusion: This study did not find a statistically significant relationship between the two conditions in the population studied. Nevertheless, the high prevalence of depression and cognitive impairment in institutionalized older adults highlights the urgent need for early detection and timely intervention in these settings.
