Abstract

The friendship between the two greatest French existentialists had one of its turning points in the exchange of published missives. This exchange was where Camus points out an existing contradiction in the Sartrean system, which motivated the present investigation: How is it that freedom in a Sartrean system represents a contradiction according to Camus through his discussion in Les Temps Moderns?
Starting from this point, the comparative analysis of their theories and their conclusions shown in the written letters was carried out and developed through a qualitative analysis of primary and secondary sources that allow to conclude that the use of history is actually the cause of the bifurcation in their theories.
