Abstract

Objective: To determine the relationship between risk perception and alcohol and tobacco consumption in high school students. Methods: This is a descriptive correlational and comparative study with a stratified random sampling of 324 participants. Personal and alcohol and tobacco consumption data were obtained; the perception of risks associated with drug use questionnaire, the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test [AUDIT], and the Fagerström Tolerance Test, based on the Regulation of the General Law of Health in Research Matters for Health, were used. Results: The female sex prevailed (54.9%), single as marital status (94.4%), studying the second semester of high school (59.9%); the average age was 16.19 years ± 1.19 years. Alcohol consumption at any time in life was 81.8%, and tobacco 42.9%; the average age of onset in alcohol consumption was 14.09 ± 2.01, and in tobacco 14.58 ± 1.82. A negative and significant relationship was found between risk perception and the AUDIT index (rho = -.162 **, p = .010), and the Fagerstrom index (rho = -. 240, p = .017). Conclusions: Students with the highest risk perception presented lower alcohol and tobacco consumption. LUX MÉDICA AÑO 15, NÚMERO 43, ENERO-ABRIL 2020. PP
