Abstract

Introduction: Excessive accumulation of earwax in the external auditory canal is a common cause of consultation in first contact and otorhinolaryngology areas. Traditional cleaning techniques include the administration of cerumenolytics, lavage, microsuction, and instrumentation with curettes. These techniques can present drawbacks such as failure, being messy, taking a long time to perform, or resulting in secondary otitis externa. The objective of this review is to describe the safety and efficacy of the new technologies available for ear cleaning. Methods: Consult the topic to be reviewed to identify primary sources. Review and analysis of information. Finally writing the review. Results. OtoSet® is an FDA-approved cleaning system backed by a clinical trial, which merges irrigation and micro-suction in washing cycles. On the other hand, Smart Otoscopes are ultra-portable devices that have a camera, WiFi connectivity and a mobile application to take photos. Thus, as extensions for the insertion of teaspoons for the extraction of cerumen. There are studies that support its usefulness as non-instrumented diagnostic support. Controversy arises due to false advertising on social networks, which offer them as safe for home use. Which implies a risk to the health of consumers. Conclusion. There is evidence of the safety and efficacy of new technologies for ear cleaning. However, false advertising and the lack of regulation of the market for products with an effect or use on health is a social and bioethical problem that remains to be addressed.
