Construction of the Scale to evaluate Dysphoria for Sexual Behaviors, Fantasies and Orientations (S-DSBFO)

There is wide variability regarding fantasies, desires, behaviors and sexual orientations shown by human beings. However, due to the discrimination suffered by people with non-heterosexual orientations, and that the internalized homophobia phenomenon is frequently experienced, it is necessary sexual behaviors and orientations. Therefore, the objective of this work was to elaborate and study the psychometric properties of the Scale to evaluate Dysphoria for Sexual Behaviors, Fantasies and Orientations (S-DSBFO). A content validity study of the items was conducted. Then the 17 items approved by expert judges were administered to 464 high school students who were given the e-dcfos, and two scales; The Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D). The internal structure was studied through an exploratory factor analysis and internal consistency through the Omega of McDonald. In the results, 10 items were conserved in two factors; Dysphoria with Low Activation (DLA) and Dysphoria with High Activation (DHA) that explain 37% of the variance. Omega's alpha value of the general scale was a bit low (Ω = .676), as well as that of the factors DBA (Ω = .572) and DAA (Ω = .575). It was observed that the correlation of the S-DSBFO with the BAI (r = .48; p <.001) and with the CES-D (r = .47; p <.001) were moderate. It is concluded that S-DSBFO is a useful instrument to detect young people who experience discomfort derived from their sexual preferences. It also requires subsequent studies, especially a Confirmatory Factor Analysis.
