Economic, social and health consequences of the transition from masculine lesbian to transsexual man

Abstract

The costs from the changes in gender, sexuality, body and corporality experienced by male lesbians who transit to transsexual men are socially related with processes of acceptance and integration. Regarding to health, they refer to chronic degenerative diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, among others. The economic costs are from hormone replacement treatment and surgical interventions to the legal costs of gender change in the acts and different official documents that provide the quality of citizenship to people.

The consequences of changes in gender, sexuality, body and corporality experienced by masculine lesbians who transition to transsexual men are socially related to processes of acceptance and integration. Regarding health, reports of chronic degenerative diseases such as diabetes and hypertension are the most frequent. The economic costs range from hormone replacement treatment and surgical interventions to the legal procedures of gender change in the acts and different official documents that provide citizenship status to people. Using the constitution of the subject and labor trajectories instrument, the life history and labor trajectory of five transsexual men who previously identified as masculine lesbians were recovered, which allowed enabled the identification and analysis of changes, consequences and transformations that occurred in their body, corporality, family, social and work relationships.
